Visa Information

Some individuals, depending on their nationality, must apply for a visa in advance to enter Uruguay.

Some people, depending on their nationality, must apply for a visa in advance to enter Uruguay. This is an essential requirement to enter the country, and the visa is necessary regardless of the length of stay.

The Uruguayan Consulates located abroad are responsible for receiving visa applications and can provide information about the requirements needed to apply.

Travelers interested in applying for a visa to enter Uruguay should contact the Consulate closest to their place of residence. Click here for a list of Embassies and Consulates of Uruguay located around the world.

Visa authorization is granted by the National Immigration Office and usually takes at least 20 business days to process. Once the Consulate receives the authorization in writing, consular representatives may issue the visa, stamping it in the passport of the holder.

Decree 356/2018 dated 29  October 2018 establishes the following categories of visas for entry Uruguay: tourist, business, work, study, family reunification, humanitarian and emergency visas, and visas for national or international congresses, conventions and seminars.

  • Tourist Visas are for individuals wish to enter the country temporarily for vacation, recreation or leisure.
  • Business Visas are for individuals or public entities who wish to enter the country to carry out business activities, or for investment or commercial exchange purposes with Uruguayan companies or those based in Uruguay.
  • Work Visas are for individuals who intend to carry out a work activity in Uruguay.
  • Visa for National or International Congresses, Conventions and Seminars are for individuals who persons plan to attend an international event of public interest that is taking place in Uruguay. Attendees should have a letter of invitation from event organizers.

COVID-19 and Vaccination Recommendations

As of 16 February 2023, Uruguay does not require COVID-19 vaccination certificate or negative test results to be presented by travelers, regardless of age or nationality.

Likewise, there are no health insurance or vaccination requirements to enter the country.
